Have you ever purchased avocados, with plans to use them soon, only to find that they are too firm. Place the avocados in a paper bag with at least one banana. The natural ripening agent, ethylene, which bananas give off, will ripen those avocados in as little as one day.
Not in a big hurry? Simply place your avocados, next to the bananas, on your counter, and they will soften up nicely in a couple of days.
A ripe avocado will keep for a long time if placed whole into a jar of water and kept in the refrigerator.

I have actually done this and it works great. I just place them right next to a banana and it works like a charm.
I eat an avocado just about every day – buying a bag of ten small ones for $2.99. I always pick the hard ones, so I can ripen them – next to a banana – when I’m ready to eat them.
